Walsh Flooring Services completed a multi-room commercial flooring installation across kitchen, staff, and washroom facilities at an educational facility in Bristol. The project required applying specialist priming over existing ceramic tile subfloors, laying smoothing underlayment screed, and fitting durable, slip-resistant safety vinyl to meet hygiene and safety standards.
Subfloor Preparation & Ceramic Tile Priming
Installing commercial safety vinyl directly over existing tiles without uplifting them requires specialized preparation to prevent joint telegraphing and ensure structural adhesion:
- Grit Primer Application: A specialized high-performance grit primer engineered for non-porous surfaces (such as ceramic tiles) was applied across the floor areas. The grit component creates a mechanical key for subsequent compound layers to grip to.
- Surface Levelling & Screeding: A heavy-duty, self-levelling smoothing compound was poured and troweled over the primed ceramic tiles. This created a smooth, flat subfloor, completely concealing tile grout lines and structural seams.
Safety Vinyl Installation & Detailing
- Slip-Resistant Sheet Vinyl: High-durability commercial safety flooring was laid across the kitchen areas, break spaces, and restrooms, delivering high slip resistance under wet and dry conditions.
- Precision Fitting & Sealing: Sheet material was hand-scribed and cut around base units, kitchen island structures, and sanitary pipework to deliver a seamless, easy-to-clean finish across all adjoining rooms.
Key Project Outcomes
- Non-Disruptive Subfloor Solution: Primed and screeded directly over ceramic tiles without full uplift, saving preparation time while providing a flat surface.
- Enhanced Safety: Durable, slip-resistant surface suited for commercial educational environments.
- Hygienic Finish: Seamless fit around kitchen units and washroom facilities simplifies ongoing maintenance and cleaning routines.
